Nebraska Consoling Emily

T'was another day and another checkup by Doctor Grey for Nebraska, who went under the alias of Richard Vanguard, which was actually his real name, investigating suspicious activities in both the New Republic and the Federal Army of Choru.. It was the third in two days, despite being the one soldier who gets injured the least. He began to think maybe something was up and there was probably some sort of reason why she kept calling him in for a checkup. She was always outgoing with performing checkups on him, and she'd always talk to him while performing the checkup. When he stepped into her office, he got right to the point. "Okay, you know I'm one of the few who rarely, if ever, gets injured on a job. So I must ask, why do you keep asking me in for a checkup?" Emily looked flustered, but ignored the question, looking through her medical equipment and found her medical scanner. Wearing her usual smile, she began examining Nebraska's vitals. "You know, I think you're hiding something. Something you don't want others to know." Still ignoring him, she walked over to the table and set the scanner down. "...You lost someone before, having you?" She was just about to pick up a physical scanner to check Nebraska's muscle tissue when she dropped it to the ground, like that question struck a chord with her. Dropping to her knees, she took off her glasses and let out a subtle sniffle. He knew that sniffle all too well. Getting up from the chair, he walked over to Emily and knelt down next to her. She was trying hard to fight back tears, but repressing her feelings for so long made it impossible and they just flowed with no effort.

"It's been a year to this day since my fiancee was killed in that stupid civil war. I kept asking him to leave the army, but the FAC wouldn't let him. And now he's dead because of it. This war is getting no one anywhere, and it's just getting worse. It's all just pointless bloodshed. Do you know how emotionally hard it is performing autopsies on the people you were friends with at some point? The bigger question is, have you lost someone close to you? Judging by how inspirational you've been to these men, I don't think you have." Every other word she spoke was trembled as she kept trying to talk between sobs. It was at this point, he really didn't have any choice but to reveal his identity to Emily. He kept hiding it for years to make sure no one found him and put him up for arrest, but he needed to do something to console her. "To be honest, I know that feeling all too well. I want you to keep this between us. I was a member of Project Freelancer, and my name in the project was Agent Nebraska. Just about everyone I knew in the project is dead, including the one I was going to get married to. Like what's happening here, there was a civil war going on between the Freelancers; Those who wanted to expose the Director for the crimes he committed, and those who still believed the Director's actions were justified. I was on the former side, but I left Project Freelancer before the flames got out of control. During that time, I've learned everyone I was friends with is either dead, or missing. So yeah, I know what it's like to lost someone close to me." Having heard everything he said, she couldn't believe there was someone who suffered as much as she has. All she could do was wrap her arms around him and sob. Nebraska, ever the caring individual, did the same, holding her close. Gently wiping her eyes, Nebraska took her glasses and placed them back on her face. "Just remember, you're not alone. If you're ever in that dark place where you think the only escape is to try and hide it, just come to me, and let it all out." Placing his hand on her cheek, Emily let off a small smile, made bigger because of Nebraska's hand caressing her cheek.
